Heath Mello was first elected in 2008 and re-elected in 2012 to represent the 5th District in the Nebraska Legislature. Senator Mello served four years as Chairman of the Legislature’s Appropriations Committee and also served on the Nebraska Retirement Systems Committee, Legislature’s Planning Committee, Building Maintenance Committee, Legislative Performance Audit Committee, Rules Committee, the Legislature’s Executive Board, and a number of select committees and task forces. Senator Mello was an active member in several national state legislative organizations. He served on the Executive Committee and as the Co-Chair of the Economic Development Committee within the Midwestern Legislative Conference of the Council of State Governments. Mello is an alumni member with the New Deal Leaders, a national network of rising pro-growth progressive state and local elected leaders. Heath currently serves as the Chief Operating Officer of the Holland Children’s Institute and Movement, not-for-profit think tank and advocacy organizations that are working to make Nebraska the national beacon for economic security and opportunity for all children and families. Heath is a graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a Political Science degree. He lives in South Omaha's Robin Hill neighborhood, where he attends St. Thomas More Catholic church with his wife, Catherine, daughter, Angelina and son, John.
